Official Lore · Spoiler-Free

History of the Region

Aetherion does not rest upon the soil of the continent. It is an archipelago of islands that float forever among the clouds, held aloft by a force no one has ever fully explained, linked to one another by bridges and routes that exist only for as long as the sky allows. Those who reach Aetherion for the first time often spend days unable to stop glancing downward by instinct.

At the heart of the main island dwells Thalass, the dragon who guards the region's seal. But Aetherion keeps a secret that runs deeper than Thalass himself: it is not a region that simply came to be. It was created — deliberately, with a purpose — as a final refuge should the rest of the continent fall. That is the truth Orlia, the Named of the region, has begun to uncover.

"It isn't just a pretty place in the sky. It's a plan. And someone has spent centuries making sure that plan will fail at the moment it's needed most."
— Orlia

Orlia does not yet know who is behind the sabotage, nor how far it has spread. What she does know is that there once existed an original contingency plan — one Aetherion was built to fulfil — and that for generations that plan has been quietly weakened, piece by piece, without anyone noticing until now.

Isles and Cloud Bridges

Settlements of the Region

☁️ Aerie — Capital

The largest and most stable island of the archipelago, seat of the principal settlement. Its buildings are anchored with roots of a material like stone but lighter, able to flex without breaking when the island drifts gently on the wind. Nothing in Aerie is built without remembering that the ground, technically, moves.

🌉 The Cloud Bridges

Structures linking the lesser islands to Aerie, made of a material that condenses and hardens only when a crossing is needed. No one in Aetherion fully trusts a cloud bridge until they have crossed it once. After that, it becomes as ordinary as any road.

🏛 Orlia's Observatory

A structure at the height of Aerie from which Orlia watches over both the seal of Thalass and any sign that the sabotage she has uncovered is still at work. Few visit unannounced — not out of hostility, but because Orlia is usually lost deep in patterns only she knows how to read.

🚫 The Central Isle — Restricted Access

Where Thalass rests and the region's seal is concentrated. Access is forbidden not by law but by the very nature of the place: it can only be reached when the cloud bridges allow it, and that happens with a frequency no one but Orlia seems able to predict with any reliability.

Those Who Live on the Air

Peoples of Aetherion

Everyone in Aetherion is human — but generations of living on ground that drifts have split them into peoples who think about the sky in very different ways. None of them would trade the archipelago for the solid, motionless continent below. They pity those who have never felt the ground breathe.

🪶 The Aerian

Island-born, sky for a birthright. They do not fear the drift — they read it, the way a sailor reads a swell. Most of Aerie is Aerian, and they hold the settled trades: the gardens, the anchor-roots, the day-to-day keeping of a city that floats.

🌉 The Bridgewrights

The people who coax the cloud bridges into solidity and know, by feel, when one is about to fail. Half guild, half bloodline — the craft is taught only to their own. Without them the archipelago would fall to pieces of isolated rock. Everyone knows it, and the Bridgewrights never quite let them forget.

⬇️ The Grounded

Newcomers who climbed up from the continent below and stayed. Years in the sky never fully cure the instinct to glance down. The Aerian tolerate them with a faint, patient amusement — but the sharpest questions about what Aetherion really is tend to come from those who remember what solid ground felt like.

Bestiary · Fauna of the Sky

Fauna of Aetherion

Dangerous Fauna

⚠ Sky Manta

Dangerous · The space between isles

A creature of vast wingspan that glides between the floating islands, almost invisible against the clouds. It rarely attacks without cause, but it fiercely defends whatever airspace it deems its flying territory — which can overlap, unpredictably, with the routes of the cloud bridges.

⚠ Downdraft

Environmental hazard · Island edges

A phenomenon in which the air around a floating island gives way all at once, creating a current strong enough to drag off anyone standing too near the edge. The people of Aerie learn to recognise the warning signs — a sudden shift in the sound of the wind — before it strikes.

Everyday Fauna

🐦 Cloud Bird

Very common · The whole archipelago

A small white-feathered bird that nests directly upon the cloud bridges when they solidify. The people of Aerie consider it a good omen — if a bridge draws cloud birds, it is held to be especially stable that day.

🐇 Drift Rabbit

Common · Lesser isles

A small mammal with a modest ability to glide short distances between nearby rocks — an adaptation unique to the region's fragmented terrain. Prized both as a pet and for its meat in the smaller settlements.

🦋 High-Altitude Butterfly

Common · Gardens of Aerie

An insect with large translucent wings, able to glide long distances by riding the archipelago's rising currents. Much loved in Aerie for its decorative presence in the hanging gardens of the capital.

Trade · Liftstone, Bridges and Sky Routes

Economy & Routes

Aetherion's economy is shaped by one hard fact: weight is the enemy. Nothing heavy can be moved far, nothing heavy can be built high, and a currency of metal coin would be absurd where every gram must be lifted. So the region trades in what is light and what is rare — and above all in liftstone, the pale, near-weightless rock that anchors the islands and the buildings upon them.

Liftstone is Aetherion's true wealth and its unit of account: debts, dowries and deals are all reckoned in measures of it. What the archipelago cannot make — grain, metal, cloth — must be hauled up from below, which is slow, costly and dependent on something no market can control: whether the cloud bridges choose to hold.

🪨 Liftstone

The pale stone that keeps Aetherion in the sky, quarried from the underside of the greater isles. It is the region's anchor, its building material and its money all at once. A fresh vein of liftstone can raise a family's fortunes for generations — and quietly shift the balance of power in Aerie.

🌉 The Bridge Routes

Trade in Aetherion moves only when the cloud bridges allow it, and no two days grant the same paths. A cargo may sit for a week waiting for a crossing that lasts an hour. The Bridgewrights who can predict those windows are, in practice, the ones who set the price of everything.

🌿 The Hanging Gardens

The terraced gardens of Aerie are the only farmland in the sky — light crops grown on lattices that spill over the island's edges. They cannot feed the whole archipelago, so garden produce is precious, and a good harvest is as much a matter of security as of pleasure.

⚠ The Long Haul from Below

Slow · Weather-dependent

Everything Aetherion cannot grow or quarry — iron, salt, heavy tools — comes up on the long haul from the continent, lifted stage by stage along the outermost isles. It is the region's one true weakness: cut the haul, and the sky cities begin to run short within a season.

Traditions · Living on the Air

Culture and Traditions

The culture of Aetherion has grown around a certainty the rest of the continent does not share: the ground beneath your feet is not fixed, and building a life upon something that moves demands a different kind of trust — in your neighbours, in the bridges, in the archipelago itself.

Traditions

The First Crossing — a rite of passage in which the young of Aerie cross one of the lesser cloud bridges for the first time, alone and unaccompanied. There is no set age; it is done when each one feels ready, and the whole community celebrates the moment, whenever it comes.

Orlia's Vigil — a recent custom, born when word of the Named's discovery spread: once a year, the people of Aerie keep a night of silence facing the central isle, in quiet acknowledgement of what Thalass holds and of what Orlia protects without anyone else fully knowing.

Beliefs

The people of Aetherion believe their region exists for a reason greater than most can see from where they live. They do not know the details of the original plan Orlia is investigating, but the idea that Aetherion is, at its heart, a refuge prepared for a moment that has not yet come has been part of their collective identity for generations — though until now, no one could have explained why.

Region 12 · The Dragon and its Named

Characters of the Region

🐉

Thalass

Keeper of the Central Isle

The dragon at the heart of Aetherion, coiled upon the central isle where the region's seal is concentrated. Thalass reaches the outer islands only when the cloud bridges allow — which is rarely, and never on anyone's schedule but his own. The people of Aerie keep a yearly vigil facing his isle, in quiet acknowledgement of what he holds and what it would mean if he ever failed to hold it.

🔭

Orlia

The Named · Watcher of Aetherion

The Named of the region, and the one who uncovered its deepest secret: that Aetherion was built, on purpose, as a last refuge should the continent fall — and that for generations someone has been quietly sabotaging the plan so it will fail at the moment it is needed most. From her observatory above Aerie she watches Thalass's seal and reads the patterns of the sabotage. She does not yet know who is behind it. She intends to.
