Ash-Ra

Region 09 ยท Ash-Ra โ€” The Ashlands

Official Lore ยท Spoiler-Free

History of the Region

Ash-Ra was once a prosperous land. The continent's oldest records describe it as fertile country, with great cities and a sophisticated culture. All of it ended in an event historians simply call the Fire, because no more specific name does justice to what it was. In a matter of days, everything burned. The cities, the forests, the rivers, the land itself. Only ash remained.

What no one knew until much later is that the fire was no accident. It was Sulthar. The dragon meant to protect the region destroyed it โ€” not out of malice, but because something within the seal in its keeping pushed so hard that the dragon had to choose between destroying the region or losing the seal. It chose what it could save. And what it could save was what lay beneath, not what stood above.

"Zarek came seeking answers about the fire that destroyed his village. He found something worse: understanding."
โ€” The Explorer's Record

Centuries later, Ash-Ra is still ash. But ash is not emptiness โ€” it is memory. Beneath it lie the ruins of what was, and beneath the ruins lies the seal the dragon protected at any cost. Zarek has spent years digging. He is not hunting treasure. She wants to know what could have been important enough to justify what the dragon did.

Camps and Ruins

Settlements of the Region

โ›บ Camp Zarek

The only permanent settlement in Ash-Ra. More a base camp than a town โ€” collapsible structures, no permanent buildings, built to be moved if need be. Zarek founded it years ago as a staging ground for his digs. It has grown to a hundred souls โ€” diggers, scholars, and people who came looking for something and never left.

๐Ÿš The Central Ruins

What remains of the capital city that stood before the Fire. Black stone structures half-buried under the ash. The diggers work here methodically. What they find โ€” everyday objects, partial records, the bones of an advanced civilization โ€” suggests that what was lost was far more sophisticated than anyone assumed.

๐ŸŒŠ The Grey Oasis

The region's only source of water โ€” a spring that rises straight from the rock, its water grey with the minerals it carries. Drinkable once treated, though a taste of ash lingers that never fully fades. There is life at the oasis โ€” the only plant life in all of Ash-Ra grows along its banks.

๐Ÿ”’ The Forbidden Dig

A site at the heart of the ruins where Zarek halted the excavation and barred all entry. She does not explain why. The diggers who worked there before the ban do not speak of what they found. Since then, Zarek has stood guard over that ground himself.

Those Who Came and Stayed

Races and Peoples

Ash-Ra has no native population โ€” the Fire ended it. Those who live in the region now came from elsewhere, drawn by different things: the history, the mystery, the chance of finding something valuable beneath the ash, or simply the need for a place where no one asks questions.

๐Ÿ” The Diggers

The largest group. They come from every region of the continent, drawn by the chance of unearthing artifacts of the lost civilization. Most find nothing of consequence. The few who find something of consequence rarely share it.

๐Ÿ“š The Scholars

Academics who study the Fire, the lost civilization, and the dragon Sulthar. Better organized than the Diggers, with systematic records. They have published theories about what happened that most of the continent ignores โ€” and that Zarek says are wrong in all the details that matter.

๐ŸŒ‘ The Nameless

People who came to Ash-Ra fleeing something and stayed because no one looks for them here. No one asks about origins in Camp Zarek โ€” it is an unwritten rule. The Nameless are good workers and poor confidants. They know more than they say about a great many things.

Trade ยท Ash, Water and Relics

Economy & Routes

Ash-Ra has no economy in the sense any other region has one โ€” it produces nothing. No harvests, no forges, no herds. The only thing Ash-Ra offers lies buried under the ash: the relics of the lost civilization. Everything else โ€” food, tools, cloth, medicine โ€” comes from outside. That is why no official currency circulates here: people trade in whatever buys another day of survival.

Ash-Ra's two real currencies are water and relics. Water from the Grey Oasis is rationed by measures carved from bone; one measure of clean water is worth more than any metal. A genuine pre-Fire relic can buy months of provisions โ€” or cost you your life if the wrong person learns you have it.

๐Ÿซ The Supply Caravans

Ash-Ra's only link to the outside world. They arrive every few weeks laden with food, water and tools, and leave laden with relics. The caravaneers do not stay in the region a moment longer than they must โ€” no one who can help it sleeps in the ash. The price they set is extortionate. Everyone pays it all the same.

๐Ÿ’ง The Rationing of the Oasis

Camp Zarek controls the Grey Oasis and shares out the water by bone measures. Water is not sold for coin โ€” it is traded for work, for relics, or for information. Anyone who tries to take water from the oasis without leave does not try it twice. It is the one law Ash-Ra enforces without exception.

โš  The Relic Market

Illegal in most regions

Beyond Ash-Ra, owning a relic of the lost civilization is forbidden in most regions โ€” they are held to be cursed, or worse, useful. That makes them worth a fortune on the black market. Diggers who find something real must choose between selling it and taking the risk, or handing it to Zarek and earning nothing.

๐Ÿงญ The Ash Trail

The overland route that crosses the region toward the living lands beyond. It is unmarked โ€” the storms would erase any sign within hours. Only the Nameless know it by heart, bend by bend, and they charge to guide. To lose the trail in Ash-Ra is not to be delayed: it is not to arrive.

Bestiary ยท What Survived the Fire

Fauna of Ash-Ra

The fauna of Ash-Ra is scarce and extraordinarily hardy. Whatever lives here either survived the Fire or arrived afterward and adapted to conditions that kill almost everything. There is not much, but what there is, is remarkable.

Dangerous Fauna

โš  Ash Scorpion

Dangerous ยท Entire region

The dominant predator of Ash-Ra. Its grey carapace makes it invisible against the ash. Potent venom โ€” not lethal to healthy adults, but it brings on ash fever that lasts for weeks and leaves permanent damage to the lungs. The diggers wear specialized clothing and learn to watch every step.

โš  Ash Storm

Environmental hazard ยท Entire region

Not a creature, but it kills like one. Windstorms that sweep up the ash and turn it into an impenetrable wall of searing heat. Without shelter, they kill in minutes. The diggers build their camps to withstand the storms and know their patterns of formation better than anyone knows the weather in any other region.

โš  Bone Serpent

Dangerous ยท Buried ruins

A white serpent that dwells in the hollows between the buried ruins, feeding on what little lives beneath the ash. Its name comes from its skeleton, visible through its translucent skin. Venomous โ€” its venom brings on very specific hallucinations: the victim sees the region as it was before the Fire. Diggers who have been bitten describe whole cities, people living their lives, a world that no longer exists.

โš  The Wind Without a Source

Strange hazard ยท Heart of the region

A wind that blows outward from the region's interior, and no weather model can explain where it comes from. It is constant, cold despite the heat around it, and smells of something burnt that is not ash. Diggers working at the center say the wind sometimes carries words โ€” fragments of sentences in the tongue of the lost civilization.

Common Fauna

๐Ÿฆ… Ash Vulture

Common ยท Entire territory

The most common bird in Ash-Ra. A broad-winged scavenger that eats practically anything organic. The diggers follow them โ€” wherever the vultures descend to feed, something is alive or newly dead, which in Ash-Ra is valuable intelligence about where organic activity can be found.

๐Ÿ€ Grey Rat

Very common ยท Camp and ruins

A rat, grey from nose to tail, that lives in Camp Zarek and among the ruins. It eats ash processed by the microorganisms of the subsoil โ€” a food cycle visiting biologists declare impossible, yet it works. They are hardy, abundant, and completely immune to ash fever.

๐ŸฆŽ Ash Lizard

Common ยท Entire region

A small lizard that eats ash scorpions โ€” the only natural predator of the dominant scorpion. The diggers protect them actively. A camp rich in ash lizards has far fewer problems with scorpions. The lizards have adapted to living alongside humans with a speed that suggests they have done it before.

๐ŸŒฑ Ash Moss

Uncommon ยท Damp ground

Not fauna, but it behaves like it. An organism that grows in the damp pockets beneath the ash and gives off a detectable scent that experienced diggers use to find groundwater. The Scholars consider it the direct descendant of the organisms that survived the Fire.

๐Ÿฆ— Black Cricket

Common ยท Ruins and subsoil

The only constant sound in Ash-Ra besides the wind. Millions of black crickets live in the subsoil and sing at night. When they fall silent โ€” which rarely happens โ€” something below has changed. Zarek keeps a listening watch on the crickets' song as an early-warning system for seismic activity, or for the stirring of Ash-Ra.

๐Ÿ•ท Ghost Spider

Uncommon ยท Buried ruins

A translucent spider that dwells in the underground chambers of the ruins. Not venomous. It feeds on the black crickets. What is remarkable is its behavior: it spins its webs across the doorframes of the ruins, as if it knew they were doors. Zarek has a theory about this that she does not share.

Strange Fauna

โ“ The Ash Figures

Rare sighting ยท Ash storms

During the fiercest storms, the ash gathers into humanoid figures that hold their shape for seconds before falling apart. The diggers who have seen them always describe the same thing: figures caught in everyday moments โ€” walking, working, talking โ€” as if the storm were replaying a scene from the lost civilization. No one has ever managed to photograph them.

โ“ Sulthar in the Ash

Phenomenon ยท Heart of the region

On windless nights, at the heart of the region, the ash on the ground shifts into patterns that some describe as the silhouette of the dragon โ€” vast, stretched across miles of ground. There is no wind to explain it. Zarek says it is Sulthar breathing. The Scholars have more elaborate theories. None is more convincing.

Traditions ยท The Memory of What Was Lost

Culture and Traditions

The culture of Ash-Ra is the youngest on the continent โ€” it has no centuries of its own history, because the history that came before was destroyed. What exists now is a frontier culture: pragmatic, without settled hierarchies, built by people of different origins who share the same ground and the same question: what exactly happened here?

Festivals

The Day of Remembrance โ€” once a year, everyone in the Camp sets down their tools and spends the day reading aloud the fragments of records they have unearthed. Not as ceremony โ€” as practical homage. The lost civilization existed. Its words deserve to be heard, even if no one fully understands what they say.

The Night of the Figures โ€” the night of the year when an ash storm is statistically most likely. The diggers ready the camp and wait. If the Ash Figures appear, they are watched in silence. No one speaks while the Figures last. When they end, each person writes down what they saw. The accounts always differ in the details and match in what matters.

Cuisine

The cooking of Ash-Ra is functional before it is pleasant โ€” resources are scarce, and culinary creativity has practical limits. Grey Stew โ€” rat and lizard cooked with ash moss and oasis water โ€” is the staple dish. Diggers arriving from other regions bring their own provisions for months. Those who have spent years in Ash-Ra have learned to find flavor in what there is.

Beliefs

The people of Ash-Ra have a complicated relationship with Sulthar the dragon. They do not hate it for what it did โ€” most understand, intellectually, that it protected something more important than the region. But they do not love it either. They respect it the way one respects something that made a terrible choice for reasons that may have been right. Zarek is the only one who has tried to speak to it directly. He does not tell what it said to him.

Region 09 ยท The Dragon and its Named

Characters of the Region

๐Ÿ‰

Sulthar

The One Who Burned ยท Keeper of the Seal

The dragon that burned its own region. When the seal in its keeping pushed too hard, Sulthar had to choose between the surface and what slept beneath โ€” and chose what it could save. Centuries later it is still there, under the ash, breathing so slowly that the ground traces its silhouette on windless nights. It is no monster. It is someone who made a terrible choice and carries it alone.

๐Ÿ”ฆ

Zarek

The Digger ยท The Named of Ash-Ra

He came seeking answers about the fire that erased his village. He found something worse: understanding. He founded Camp Zarek and has spent years digging the ash โ€” not for relics, but to learn what could have been important enough to justify what Sulthar did. It was he who halted the Forbidden Dig, and he is the only one who has tried to speak to the dragon directly. He does not tell what it said to him.
