History of the Region

Lysoria is a crystal desert where light does not behave as it does anywhere else on the continent. It bends, it repeats itself, it hangs suspended in the air long after its source has gone. Whoever walks Lysoria without a guide begins to see things that are not there โ€” or that were there once, long ago, or that have not yet come to pass. No one in the region dares say for certain which of the three it is.

At the heart of that desert dwells Ysandra, bound within a seal woven from memories cast into the air as mirages. She has been there for centuries โ€” so long that she has begun to mistake the past for the present. To Ysandra, a conversation from two hundred years ago can feel more real than the wind sweeping across her scales this very moment.

"I speak to her, and sometimes she answers something I said a century ago. I don't know whether she hears me, or the person I was back then."
โ€” Lyriana

Lyriana is the only person Ysandra recognizes without fail, no matter which moment of her memory she is trapped in. No one knows exactly why. Lyriana does not fully know either โ€” she only knows that she is the one soul who can help the dragon tell what is real from what is echo, and that this labor has no end in sight.

Oases and Crystal Roads

Settlements of the Region

๐Ÿ’Ž Espejo โ€” Capital

The only permanent settlement in Lysoria, built around an oasis whose water mirrors the sky with an unnatural clarity. Its people have learned to live with the mirages rather than fight them โ€” their houses have low walls and open roofs, built so as not to block the view of whatever is cast upon the air, real or not.

๐Ÿ›ค The Crystal Roads

Trails marked with shards of crystal driven into the ground, which glow only when the way ahead is safe. Without them, any route through the desert becomes indistinguishable from a mirage. The guides of Lysoria memorize the glow-pattern of every road, for no paper map survives the region's warped light intact.

๐Ÿ• Lyriana's Camp

A fixed point near the heart of the desert โ€” the closest anyone can come to Ysandra's seal without losing all sense of time. Lyriana spends more of her days there than in Espejo. Those who visit say that talking with her is like talking with someone who keeps one foot in the present and the other in a different century, all the time.

๐Ÿšซ The Center โ€” Restricted Access

The zone where Ysandra's seal is concentrated. No one enters without Lyriana. Not because of any formal prohibition, but because without her it is all but impossible to find the way back through the layers of mirage that gather thick around the dragon.

Those Who Live Among Reflections

Races and Peoples

The people of Lysoria are not set apart by blood but by their relationship with the light. To live in a crystal desert where every sight may be a memory, a premonition, or a lie is to become a particular kind of person โ€” patient, unhurried to believe, and strangely at peace with never being wholly certain of what stands before them.

๐Ÿ’Ž The People of Espejo

The oasis-dwellers, born and raised among the mirages. They neither fear nor chase the visions โ€” they live alongside them, building low-walled, open-roofed homes so as never to block the view of whatever the air chooses to show. Telling the seen from the lived is, for them, a secondary concern.

๐Ÿงญ The Road-Guides

A closed guild who carry the glow-pattern of every Crystal Road in their memory, for no paper map survives the region's warped light. They are the only ones who can lead a traveler across Lysoria and back. Their knowledge is spoken, never written, and passed only to those the guild chooses.

๐ŸŒซ The Mirage-Touched

Rare ยท Wanderers of the deep desert

Those who spent too long unguided among the visions and came back changed โ€” half-prophet, half-lost, speaking of things that were, or will be, or never were. Espejo treats them with a careful mix of reverence and pity. Some of what they say comes true. No one has learned to tell which part in time.

Trade ยท Light, Water and Memory

Economy & Routes

Lysoria's economy is built on three scarce and precious things: crystal, water, and safe passage. The desert produces no harvest and keeps no herds โ€” what it offers is what the light leaves behind, and the skill to cross a land where a wrong step follows a mirage into nowhere.

The region's warped light makes ordinary coin nearly worthless to a stranger: without a guide, no amount of gold buys a way out of the desert. And so the truest currency in Lysoria is a guide's trust โ€” earned slowly, spent carefully, and worth more than any purse.

๐Ÿ’Ž The Crystal Harvest

The desert's crystal is unlike any other on the continent โ€” it holds and bends light, and the finest pieces seem to store a faint glow of their own. Cut and traded outward, it is prized by lantern-makers, scholars and dragons' hoarders alike. Espejo lives, in large part, on what it can pull from the dunes.

๐Ÿ’ง The Oasis Water

The oasis of Espejo is the only reliable water in Lysoria, and its mirror-clear pool is guarded as the region's true heart. Water is measured and shared, never squandered โ€” a full skin of Espejo water is a traveler's most valuable possession before they set out across the crystal.

๐Ÿงญ The Guide's Toll

Safe passage is Lysoria's great trade. The Road-Guides charge to lead caravans and travelers along the Crystal Roads, and their price is not questioned โ€” the alternative is to wander the mirages alone. A guide who loses a client to the desert loses far more than a fee; the guild does not forget.

โš  The Memory Trade

Forbidden in most regions ยท Deep desert

There are those who claim to capture Lysoria's mirages โ€” to sell a glimpse of a lost love, a dead city, a moment that never came. Most of it is fraud. Some of it is not, and that is the danger: a true captured memory can unmoor a mind as thoroughly as it unmoored Ysandra. Espejo tolerates the trade at its edges and warns every buyer once.

Bestiary ยท Creatures of the Mirage

Wildlife of Lysoria

Dangerous Creatures

โš  Crystal Scorpion

Dangerous ยท Crystal dunes

A scorpion whose carapace refracts the light until it becomes all but invisible among the crystal dunes. Its venom does not kill outright โ€” it brings on hallucinations that bleed into the region's natural mirages, making it nearly impossible to tell real danger from imagined for as long as the poison lasts.

โš  Lightstorm

Environmental hazard ยท The whole desert

A phenomenon in which Lysoria's warped light flares without warning, multiplying the mirages until a traveler can lose all bearings within minutes. The guides of Espejo know the warning signs and take shelter before the storm reaches its peak.

Everyday Creatures

๐ŸฆŽ Mirror Lizard

Very common ยท The whole desert

A small reptile whose skin shifts color to reflect its surroundings, to the point of seeming almost transparent against the crystal. The people of Espejo consider it a useful omen: when the lizards flee in droves toward the oasis, a lightstorm is usually on its way.

๐Ÿช Dune Camel

Common ยท Crystal roads

A beast of burden adapted to the heat and the cutting ground of the crystal desert, with reinforced pads on its feet. It is the chief means of travel between Espejo and the region's smaller settlements.

๐Ÿฆ‹ Light Butterfly

Common ยท Near the oasis

An insect with translucent wings that seems to shed its own light in flight. It is harmless, but its appearance in great numbers tends to coincide with lulls in the region's mirages, and so the people of Espejo take it as a good omen.

Traditions ยท Living Among Reflections

Culture and Traditions

The culture of Lysoria turns on a single idea: what you see is not always what is โ€” and that need not be a problem, if you learn to live with it. The people of Espejo do not distrust the mirages; they weave them into their daily lives, to the point where telling the told from the lived becomes, for them, a secondary concern.

Traditions

The Vigil of the Oasis โ€” from time to time, the people of Espejo gather beside the water to wait for one particular mirage: the image of someone who is gone. It is considered neither mourning nor superstition, but a way of keeping the region's memory alive โ€” just as Ysandra keeps her own alive, however tangled it has become.

The guides of the Crystal Roads form a closed guild that passes down the glow-pattern of every trail by word of mouth. No written record exists โ€” a paper map of Lysoria is held to be, in itself, just one more mirage.

Beliefs

The people of Lysoria believe that Ysandra is neither mad nor lost โ€” she is simply living in more time than a single present can hold. To many in Espejo, Lyriana is not only one of the Named, but the person who has chosen to bear the task of reminding a thousand-year-old dragon what day it is.

๐Ÿ‰

Ysandra

The One Lost in Time ยท Keeper of the Seal

The dragon of the mirages, bound within a seal woven from memory cast into the air. She has held it so long that she has begun to mistake the past for the present โ€” a conversation from two centuries ago can feel more real to her than the wind on her scales now. She is not mad and not lost; she is simply living in more time than a single present can hold.

๐Ÿ”ฎ

Lyriana

The Anchor ยท The Named of Lysoria

The one soul Ysandra recognizes without fail, in whatever century of her memory she is trapped. No one โ€” not even Lyriana โ€” fully knows why. What she knows is that she alone can help the dragon tell the real from the echo, and that this labor has no end in sight. She keeps one foot in the present so that Ysandra does not lose hers entirely.
